Over the next several months, we’ll be shining a spotlight on the three Big Bets of REACH 2030 + Beyond: Jobs, People, and Housing.
We’re kicking things off with Housing—an area where the past year has brought promising momentum. But before we dive into recent wins and progress, let’s take a step back and look at the big picture.
Why Housing?
It’s no secret that the Central Coast faces a critical shortage of homes that everyday people can afford. People with jobs. People raising families. Young adults fresh out of college who want to stay and grow their careers here. Our kids. Our friends and neighbors. The people who provide our essential services, power our local businesses, and make our communities vibrant.
This housing gap isn’t just a social issue—it’s a fundamental threat to our economy and our way of life.
At its core, housing is about supporting people’s basic needs. It’s the foundation of quality of life and community stability. And it has an outsized influence on everything from health and education to economic opportunity and regional resilience.
A healthy community needs a healthy housing supply—and that means a diverse mix of housing types for a range of income levels.
Addressing this challenge isn’t optional. It’s an all-hands-on-deck priority, essential to the future of the Central Coast.
REACH is taking a multi-pronged approach, working across government, business and civic organizations to:
-
Build and support regional coalitions
-
Secure investment in critical infrastructure
-
Expand programs that help workers access housing
-
Champion long-term systems change to drive lasting impact
