Big Tech’s Boldest Breakthroughs Born on the Central Coast

Microsoft, Google and Amazon all started something big here

Those recent headline-grabbing advances in quantum computing and AI? They’re all rooted right here.

  • A team led by UC Santa Barbara physicists pioneered Microsoft’s groundbreaking new quantum chip, which was unveiled last month at the company’s Station Q research center at UCSB.

  • Google’s breakthrough quantum chip Willow, announced in December, was developed and fabricated at its Santa Barbara Quantum AI campus.

  • And behind Amazon’s newly launched Alexa+ — rebuilt from the ground up with generative AI at its core — is the company’s AI team in Santa Barbara. (Fun fact: Santa Barbara was even featured in the launch video.)
