A Major Boost for the Central Coast Space Economy

Over the past five years, a bold vision has taken shape: to make the Central Coast a thriving hub of the global space economy. Powered by vigorous collaboration and rigorous strategy, that vision is no longer just ambition — it’s accelerating.

And momentum just reached a new high point.

The U.S. Space Force has awarded $77.5 million to expand satellite processing facilities at Vandenberg Space Force Base — a critical infrastructure investment that will increase launch capacity and support the growth of the space ecosystem right here on the Central Coast.

️ Wait — what is satellite processing?

Before a satellite can hitch a ride to space, it has to go through a series of final steps — things like testing, fueling, and integration with the rocket. These are known as satellite (or payload) processing, and they have to happen in specialized cleanroom environments that meet strict technical and safety standards.

This investment will significantly expand those capabilities at Vandenberg, helping the region keep pace with surging demand from the space sector.

Why it matters

It’s not just about rockets and satellites. This contract is a major win for the Central Coast — because more launch infrastructure means more missions, more jobs, and more economic opportunity rooted right here.

And we’re already building on it. With additional investments in workforce training, infrastructure, and innovation already underway, we’re continuing to foster a future where the Central Coast leads in space — and the benefits reach every part of our region.
